A Shallow-Seas Musical
A Shallow-Seas Musical
Co-created with the Creations Musical Theatre Camp at the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, 2009
Inspired by the “Shallow Seas” episode of the Discovery Channel’s “Planet Earth” series.
A few dozen feet under the surface of the ocean, on a bright stretch of coral, two Starfish lazily perform Sun Salutations. Two Dolphins, laughing and dancing, slam into them. As they argue about whose way of life is better, a school of Sardines is chased onstage by ravenous Sharks. The good-willed Dolphins and Starfish disagree on the best way for the Sardines to survive the next attack. When the Sharks return, what will the Sardines do?
Finale
Dolphins:
We are dolphins and we love to play,
jumping through the waves!
And we used to think that that's the way
everybody should behave.
Add Starfish and Sardines:
But now we’ve learned, thanks to new friends,
a very different moral:
and that's to sometimes takes it slow
and stop to smell the coral!
All:
It's relaxing,
wet, blue, and refreshing.
Full of crustaceans
and coral reefs.
Schools of fish
roam as they please:
up, down, under, around
in our shallow seas!
Starfish:
The starfish way was all too clear;
we liked to take it easy.
The thought of swimming against the flow
was enough to make us queasy.
All:
But the ebb and flow of the tides do show
that for us to get along,
we have to open up our minds and
harmonize in song!
It's relaxing,
wet, blue, and refreshing.
Full of crustaceans
and coral reefs.
Schools of fish
roam as they please:
up, down, under, around
in our shallow seas.
In our shallow, in our shallow, in our shallow seas!
